More than 40 Borders businesses headed to Ettrick Riverside to find out how to pull more website traffic at our recent workshop with Business Gateway. Karen Hume of Kelso country outfitters A Hume Ltd was a fantastic guest speaker, sharing generous insights into the company’s online retail strategy. A combination of serious investment, dedication to detail and creative thinking has helped the family-run business to a prime position in their high-end niche market, and also won them several Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards, so it was great to hear how they did it!
Distinctive photography, print advertising and SEO were just part of the marketing story. Karen also stressed that online retail needs to work that bit harder to build customer relationships, so phone calls and customised service were still a key priority.
Borders Creative speakers Giles Etherington (Fruitful Advertising & Design), Tania Paterson (Cohorts by Design) and Jules Horne (Texthouse) gave practical advice on where creative services can make a difference to web traffic, especially in the areas of marketing, web design and SEO copywriting. Our colleagues David McLean and Sandra Campbell from Business Gateway also gave the lowdown on Google Adwords and getting started in social media marketing. Huge thanks to Karen, David, Sandra and our own Hugh Williams of Business Gateway for supporting such a good event. Look out for more workshops on this vital topic later in the year.
